3/5/2018 10:19:00 AM

The Lady Braves JV and Varsity Squads traveled to Cypress Creek High School to take on the Bears in a District and Metro showdown. Both teams came out victorious, with the JV Braves setting the tempo for the night; they would rule 10-1. Gabbie Young opened up the scoring a minute into the game on a one on one breakaway with the Bear’s goalie. The Braves would get up 5-0 before the Bears finally solved Goalkeeper Gabbie Roberts. Up 5-1 at the half, the Braves were relentless in putting the Bears away, scoring five more goals in the second half.

Sydney Capen led the way with a game-high four goals. Madison Graham notched three goals, while Young finished with two and Sydney Heidenreich added one. Taylor McNeill was a dominant force, helping the Braves own the possession battle at the faceoff X, while scooping up four ground balls. Zahria Wright contributed to the dominant possessions, scooping up four of her own ground balls. Ashley Troy was a matchup-nightmare for the Bears at the midfield, turning away the Bears offense, as well as contributing to the Braves offense. Gabbie Roberts kept the Bears offense at bay, making 8 saves.

The JV Braves improve to 1-1, and will face Lake Nona High School on Wednesday, March 7, at the Reservation.

With the JV Braves setting the tone, Varsity was able to carry that momentum, winning 6-5 in an important District and Metro game. The Braves never trailed, but were always answered by the Bears. The Braves went up 2-0 before the Bears would knot the game up. The Braves then would lead by two again at 5-3, before the Bears tied the game with less than 10 minutes left to play. Then, with less than five minutes to play, the Braves added one more goal to take the lead, 6-5. Possessions would go back and forth with both defense and goalies foiling the offense. The Braves seemed to have put away the game, until a turnover almost proved costly. The Bears would get one last drive down the field before the Braves would commit a foul; The Bears would earn a free position shot with one second left. Payton Johnson made the save as time expired, causing the Braves to rush the field.

Payton Johnson earned her second win of the year, as well as collecting 10 saves. Avery Tyndall led the Braves in scoring with two goals and an assist. Juliette Paymayesh, Jessica Shutack, Kara Gentry, and Lexi Pace all contributed with a goal a piece. Gentry would add an assist, as well as scooping up a game-high eight ground balls. The tag team of Gentry and Savannah Partlow at the draw circle helped win possessions for the Braves. Along with Johnson, the Brave defense played admirably, shutting out the Bears for the first 15 minutes of the game, as well as collecting seven ground balls.

The Braves improve to 2-2 (2-0 D, 2-2 M) on the year. The Braves return to action Wednesday, March 7, when they take on Lake Nona High School in another District and Metro game. The Braves are looking for revenge from last year’s defeat of 12-8.
